Here is an interesting article on the relationship between the Mono project and Microsoft’s .NET strategy.

Miguel de Icaza responded well to that story, but I also have something to add. If Microsoft lets Mono grow to the point where Linux depends on it, and then destroys it, this helps Sun immensely. Sun can come in a and say “see! we told you so! Use Java! We support Linux and we won’t yank it away from you!”

I recently finished a project using ASP.NET for work and was very impressed with C# and .NET. What impressed me more was that I was able to take my project and deploy it on my Linux box at home on Mono’s ASP.NET setver and it just works. I’m going to probably use .NET quite a bit in the future, but if and only if it works on Linux and Mac OS X as well.

Last year, I was at a get-together called Breakfast w/ Bill. The crowd was allowed to ask Bill questions. One person asked “What about Mono?” Bill pretended not to be aware of its existence. A good indication that your prediction (and Sun’s) is in the equation.

By the way, how is support for .NET on Macs? I don’t hear much.

Mono works on Mac OS X, but its interepreted, there isnt a jittter yet. Right now Ximian is concentrating on Linux on x86, but once they are done witht that the next priority is Mac OS X. Most of Ximians employees have powerbooks :)
