I've started work on migrating my port of Dali Clock to apple's official SDK, and JWZ has contacted me about merging the iPhone port back into the main Dali Clock distribution he maintains. There are some pretty big changes between the homebrew SDK and the official SDK, so I had to make some pretty big changes to how I was drawing to the screen. Right now it works in the simulator but it leaks memory like crazy. Hopefully by the time Mobile OSX 2.0 is released to the public, and the app store is online, you'll be able to download a nice version of daliclock from the app store for free

If you feel like helping out, work on the official SDK version is happening in the apple-sdk branch in subversion. Also, check out the Google Code page.

First of all: Yes, I’m still alive.

Lately I’ve been messing around with writing native iPhone apps, and the first one I’ve written is a native port of Dali Clock . Here’s the description for those of you who don’t know what that is:

This is a port of the Mac OS X version by Jamie Zawinski (JWZ) to the iPhone. Dali Clock is a digital clock. When a digit changes, it “melts” into it new shape. The date is displayed when the screen is tapped. The clock also does funky psychedelic color cycling. It can be installed via Installer.app by looking in the “Utilities” category, or downloaded from google code.

If you have an iPhone, check it out from installer.app, and here’s the Google Code site I’ve set up for the project.

Like this story? Digg it!

As we all know, I love my Wii. The only real problem is sweat, when you play a 5 game long tennis match, or box, or pretty much anything else in Wii Sports, your hands get sweaty and you lose your grip on the Wiimote, with potentially disasterous effects if you accidently launch your wiimote at your TV or something/someone else.

Tennis players are familiar with this problem, which is why many years ago someone invented the Tourna Grip. It’s what tennis people call an over grip, it’s a thin strip of tacky spongy material that absorbs sweat and maintains your grip.

So i said to myself, “Self, why don’t i just put a tourna grip on this thing?” 5 minutes later, This was the result (click to enlarge):

Well, that certianly looks wierd, I think we’re on the right track. Now for play testing! I played a best of 5 game of tennis in single player mode. We went all the way to game 5 so i was sweating like crazy at the end. The Tourna Grip worked PERFECTLY! From the start I had perfect control of the Wiimote with no slippage, and as the match wore on, the Tourna Grip did it’s thing by absorbing the sweat and staying super tacky. I even think i had more control, I was able to hit winners with my backhand, which normally I can’t do.

Remember kids… You heard it here first! Tourna Grip… for the Wiimote == awesomeness.

I gotta say, Nintendo has really made a masterpiece here with the Wii and Wii Sports. I brought my Wii to t-day dinner, and everyone loved it. Everyone from my 4 year old cousins to my 80 year old grandmother was able to play and had a ball.

The crazyest were the golf nuts in the croud. They got super serious and technical with it. It looks like all my relatives are going to buy Wiis for eachother this year. The parents of the 4 year olds were like ‘We’ll buy this for the kids, and if they don’t play it I will for sure :)”

I also took it to a friends house last night and we played Wii Sports until 5 in the morning, we started making Miis (basically cartoonish avatars that are used in the games and sent between Wiis over the net) for people like Ali G, George Bush (TheDecider), Napoleon Dynamite, Michael Jackson and others. It was hilarious to be playing baseball and have Ali G come up to bat and hit a home run. I was laughing so hard all night that I was sore the next day, no joke. Another interesting thing i noticed, When it got late and everyone was getting sleepy, getting up and getting physical to play the games woke everyone up.

Can’t recommend this enough, Sony must be shitting in their pants.

Mike’s Official score? 10/10

Bravo.
